School transfers from Canterbury for pupils and students: home, school, university and the airport

Canterbury is a city where a lot of people are young and on the move: pupils heading back to school after the holidays, boarders flying home at half term, and students arriving at university with a car boot's worth of belongings. School transfers from Canterbury are pre-booked journeys for exactly these trips.

Express Travel Kent drives pupils and students from the family home to school, college or university, to the airport and back again; the classic cases are the first and last days of term and the odd exchange visit abroad. This guide explains how the dates fall, how airport meetings work, which car suits the luggage and what parents usually tell us when they book.

What school transfers from Canterbury cover

A school transfer is an ordinary pre-booked journey with a young passenger: from a family home in Hales Place to a school elsewhere in Kent, from Gatwick to a boarding house after a flight from abroad, or from a student house in Northgate to Heathrow when the summer term finishes.

Behind the wheel is a licensed private hire driver, and councils grant that licence only after an enhanced DBS check. The cars hold council licences too, with hire and reward insurance. What you book is the drive itself, with no escort or chaperone riding along.

Term dates and the busiest days

Term dates are not the same for every school. Kent County Council fixes the calendar for its community schools; foundation and voluntary aided schools decide theirs through their governors, academies and free schools may alter how long their terms run, and independent schools keep calendars of their own. Always plan from the dates your school sends home.

The first and last days of term, half-term weekends and the start of the summer holidays are when airports and motorways are busiest, and when a Friday on the M25 can cost up to three quarters of an hour more. Book those dates well ahead and build in extra time.

Universities have their own rhythm of moving-in days, end-of-term departures and graduations. Canterbury Christ Church University holds graduation ceremonies in Canterbury Cathedral, where no vehicle can enter the Precincts, so graduates and families are set down a short walk from Christ Church Gate.

Flying in or out at the start and end of term

For pupils and students landing from abroad, we keep an eye on the flight and send the car for the time it really lands, at no extra cost. In the arrivals hall the driver holds up a board with the young passenger's name and gives a hand with the bags.

There are 45 minutes of free waiting after a flight from abroad and 30 after a UK flight, from the moment of landing. If a young traveller is stuck in the passport queue, a quick message from them or from a parent keeps everyone informed.

Airlines set their own rules for children flying without an adult. Check them before booking, and tell us anything they ask of the person collecting at the arrivals end, so the arrangements match.

Trunks, boxes and the right car

Term-time luggage is rarely light. An estate has room for four people and three or four big cases, usually enough for one pupil with a trunk and a sports bag. An MPV, with six seats and space for four or more large cases, lets two or three friends bound for the same airport share, and the price is for the car, not per head.

A student moving into halls with boxes, a duvet and a desk lamp should list the bags honestly when booking. It is far easier to send a bigger car than to discover on the day that the boot will not close.

Pickups at homes, stations and campus

Collections can start at any address in the city or the villages around it, from Sturry and Westbere to Bridge and Chartham. Inside the city walls, automatic bollards have kept most vehicles out of the centre since October 2020, so a meeting point at the edge of the pedestrian zone is agreed in advance.

Students arriving by train can be met at Canterbury West, where high-speed trains from St Pancras call, or at Canterbury East, which has a step-free footbridge over the ring road. The main Christ Church University campus is on North Holmes Road (CT1 1QU); give the building or entrance when you book.

What parents tell us when booking

Most of what makes a school transfer go smoothly is in the booking notes. These are the details parents usually include:

  • Who is travelling, spelled the way it should read on the arrivals board
  • A mobile number for the young traveller and one for a parent
  • Flight number, airline and terminal, or the train's arrival time
  • The exact pickup and drop-off addresses, including the boarding house, hall or entrance
  • How many big cases, plus anything awkward such as an instrument or a trunk
  • The age of any younger sibling coming along who needs a child seat

Fixed fares, changes and cancellations

Put both addresses into the booking system and it shows one fixed price for the car before you pay; traffic, roadworks, detours and dawn starts leave it untouched. It can rise only when the trip changes: extra waiting after the free allowance, an unbooked stop, a big detour requested on the day, or tolls and parking where they apply.

School plans change at short notice. More than a day's warning and a cancellation costs nothing; 6 to 24 hours' warning can cost up to half; under 6 hours, or once the car is on its way, the whole fare may be due. Online you can pay by card, Apple Pay, Google Pay, Klarna or Revolut.
