How your fixed airport taxi fare from Canterbury is worked out

You need five things: the pickup address (a postcode is enough), the airport and its terminal, the day and time, the number of travellers and the number of large cases. The luggage picks the car. Two big cases and up to four people fit a saloon; an executive car takes four people with two or three cases; an estate four people with three or four; an MPV six people with four or more.

There is no meter in the car. Slow traffic, roadworks, a diversion round an accident, a departure before dawn, a late-night return, a weekend or a bank holiday: none of them alters the figure you confirmed.

It only grows when the journey itself grows. That means waiting longer than the free allowance (three quarters of an hour from an international landing, half an hour from a domestic one, ten minutes at a home address), a stop added on the day, a large change of route you request on the way, and car park fees or tolls met during the trip where they apply, the Dartford Crossing on a Stansted or Luton run being the usual example.

Cancelling with a full day's notice or more is free. With between 6 and 24 hours to go, up to half the fare can be kept; inside 6 hours, or once the driver has set out, you may be charged in full.

The figure is calculated for the exact pickup point, not for a zone. A farmhouse outside Petham, a terrace in Upstreet, a cottage near Ickham church, a student flat in Northgate and a family home in Hales Place each get their own number.

Inside the city walls most streets sit behind automatic bollards, so add a line to the booking and a pickup point on the edge of the pedestrian area is agreed with you. Canterbury East, Canterbury West, the North Holmes Road campus of Christ Church University and Kent and Canterbury Hospital on Ethelbert Road can all be chosen as the starting point instead of a home address.

Tell us the terminal: North or South at Gatwick, where a free train links the two in about two minutes at any hour, or 2, 3, 4 or 5 at Heathrow. At Heathrow the car waits in the terminal car park rather than on the forecourt; at Terminal 4, whose multi-storey closed in June 2026, it uses the Priority Pick-Up Area or the Park and Ride instead.

For the journey home your flight is followed in the air and the car is timed to its actual landing, with no extra cost. A driver with your name on a board meets you in the arrivals hall, and you are set down at your door, or as near to it as the bollards allow.
